Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to you because I am interested in the corporate event manager position at your company. I have been working in the industry for quite some time, and I believe I will be an asset to you with my knowledge and skill.

First and foremost, you need to make your hiring manager dance around as if you watched kids walking into Disneyland. That’s how thrilled they need to be after reading your intro.

They won’t feel that way if you address them wrong, though, or go for a generic cover letter. What would your guests think if you sent them invitations without personalization? 

How unthoughtful!

Instead of writing “Dear Hiring Manager,” include the hiring manager’s name. “To Whom It May Concern” is terrible, too. And, “Dear Sir or Madam” is long foregone.

If you can’t find their name, even though you went into the deepest of the web, only then address your cover letter “To The Hiring Committee” or “Dear [Name of the Department] Hiring Manager.”

  • make a little joke if it’s not so formal an application, but you do that at your own risk.
