How to Write a Job Description for a Cashier Resume
Good news or bad news first? Let’s get the bad news over with. The bad news is that cashier jobs are expected to decline thanks to the development of cashier-free stores like Amazon Go. The good news is that cashier positions are still easy to find thanks to frequent cashier job turnover. That means if you can write a great cashier job description for a resume, you can get a better cashier job or use your cashier experience as a stepping stone to jobs like customer service representative, sales associate, and receptionist. So how do you describe a cashier job on a resume? Find out by following these tips:
1. Make your work experience section heading stick out.
Describe your relevant work experience in a section with one of the following titles: Experience, Work History, Work Experience, or Employment History. You can use bold or CAPITAL letters to be extra noticeable.
2. Place your job description section in the right spot.
Put your job experience section towards the top of your resume, right below your resume summary, if you’ve had customer service experience. If you’ve never been a cashier before and you’re writing a resume for your first job, list any relevant experience you’ve had whether it was a part-time job or volunteering.
3. Put your cashier resume job descriptions in reverse-chronological order.
Use the chronological resume format by starting with your current or most recent job and then go backwards.
4. Make every entry clear and include the necessary information.
Start each cashier job description with your professional job title, company, location, and dates you worked.
5. List up to 5 bullet points for each job description.
Go above and beyond just describing your cashier duties and responsibilities. Instead, use this space like a list of accomplishments. If you have a long list of work experience, describe older positions with less detail and fewer bullet points.

6. Target the job posting with your cashier job description
Create a master list of your resume skill set and then mention the skills most needed for the job posting you’re applying for. For example, if you have experience as a waiter, you can highlight the customer service skills that position required.
7. Start each bullet with action verbs.
Use the best action words for resumes, such as served, contributed, assisted, delivered, etc., to show you can handle anything a customer throws at you (metaphorically).
8. Include a “Key Achievement” subsection to impress.
If you want your resume to stand out from the cashier crowd, you need to make yourself memorable. Consider adding key achievements to each of your previous jobs to show you’re not like the rest of ‘em. If you want to really impress, use the Problem-Action-Result (PAR) method.

Now let’s make the rest of your cashier resume match your killer work experience section. Here’s what else goes on a resume:
- Pick the perfect resume format for the job you’re applying for. If you want to highlight your work experience and cashier accomplishments, go with the reverse-chronological resume format.
- Use a resume profile at the top of your resume to give an elevator pitch of yourself. If you already have good experience in customer service, choose a resume summary. If you’re just starting out, a resume objective is the better choice.
- Describe your work experience in such a way that your skills become obvious. Start each bullet with action verbs like operated, contributed, performed, etc.
- Mention the cashier skills you have like communication, Point of Sale (POS) systems, and attention to detail. Include resume soft skills, hard skills and technical skills.
- List any additional training you’ve received, like employer training in loss prevention, conflict resolution, or customer service.
- Add some personality to your resume with a section like: language skills, achievements and awards, volunteer experience, and hobbies and interests.
