Do Entry-Level Resumes Need a Summary?

Do Entry-Level Resumes Need a Summary?

Writing an entry-level resume and deciding whether you require a resume summary for it? Read on to find out if you need something else instead.

As seen in:

Entry-level resumes need a resume objective. While every resume has to have an introductory part, a resume summary only works for candidates with some experience (i.e., there has to be something to summarize). An objective is the best way to go if you’re a student, just beginning your career, or even switching professional lanes.

If you’re struggling with how to start your resume, take a “backward” approach—draft the document first. It will make it easier to see the most important points and avoid repetition. Study the job ad carefully to see which information the employer expects to see. Point out your relevant skills and accomplishments (those may be transferable skills and your academic successes). Make sure you describe how working for that particular company aligns with your career goals and how you expect to bring value. A resume objective should be 3–4 sentences long, so keep it brief.
